The adventures of Bolliver Hoopsleeve, acrobat, picklock, and aerial fencer, come to their heartwarming and hilarious conclusion at last. Bollie, Brancus, and Aunt Morgellie have returned to the family circus whence Bollie was ejected way back in the first story. The plan was to do a few acrobatics and earn re-entry to the show—but, in true Hoopsleeve fashion, everyone forgot Bolliver was supposed to learn some important life lessons during his time on the road.

Everyone, that is, except his parents. Now Bolliver must stall for time by pouring a panoply of teas (the only thing guaranteed to distract a gathering of Hoopsleeves) while he thinks of what he can say to soften his parents' stony hearts—or gathers the courage to admit the truth: that Bolliver Hoopsleeve is not a bright boy.
